In case you haven't noticed, soccer is a huge thing in Germany. Immensely huge. While at home, various clubs attract specific clientele - St. Pauli for example is much more attractive to the "social underbelly" than Bayern Munich is which tends to attract well situated followers. When it comes to the big international tournaments, soccer becomes the great equalizer and Germans from all walks of li...

I thought it’s time to share stuff more frequently here, so starting today you will find a selection of interesting finds and reads from all over the Internet. Rather than just resorting to re-tweeting or re-posting stuff on Twitter or Tumblr, it’s more fun to post them on this blog where I have the room and freedom to comment with more than just a handful of words. Why “Report from the tren...

The term compact camera often has a condescending ring to it, as most compact cameras don't live up to premium expectations. In the 1990s, when film photography was still a mass market for professionals and consumers alike, a number of Japanese manufacturers - many of them not in the photography business anymore today - swarmed the market with a range of outstanding premium compact cameras, some o...

Due to my work, I benefit from international one day business trips occasionally. Yesterday, I had a meeting in London, so I hopped on a plane from Hamburg to London in the morning and back again in the evening. On my way to my meeting and back to the airport I managed to get away with some images. My meeting place was close to Victoria station where the company I work for has their London offi...

In part one of this blog post, I shared London's Underground and trains as well as some quieter street scenes away from the main hustle and bustle of the busy areas. I did turn my attention to a wide area of locations while in London, including a pub. Pubs are not typically among the locations I seek images in. Depending on the kind of location and local culture, a pub borders on being a private d...

There are a handful of cities on this planet that stand out from the all the other cities in terms of relevance, vibrancy, culture, flair and maybe even something intangible as mojo. It's not easy to define the definite top ten of metropolises with the top contenders in order to each other, but it's pretty clear that cities such as New York City, Tokyo, Paris and London rank very high in this top ...

It feels like the new year barely started and now the first quarter is already gone. And yes, in many parts of Europe, winter is still in charge! That's very much true for my native Hamburg in northern Germany where it has snowed until the last days with large spots of snow still dominating the landscape outside. Looking back at the last year in pictures, I have compiled some of the analog highlig...

Last year, I participated in the International Street Photography Award 2012 of the London Festival of Photography. The entries I submitted are a mix of black and white images (all digital), circling on the theme of commuting. Most images were taken either at dark evenings or at night or within areas with little available light. ...

Things happen fast in street photography. I spotted this woman whose headscarf and dress matched the color pattern of the subway station and while I saw the image forming in my mind, I wasn't quick enough the raise the camera to eye level, so this is a shot from the hip - hence the not ideal exposure. I still think this image works....
